Ways To Prevent Sexual Harassment In The Workplace

Every Organisation has a responsibility to prevent sexual harassment from occurring in the workplace. If the employer knew and they did not take actions to stop it, then the employer can be held liable for legal actions. Here are some tips to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace:

1. Create Awareness: Communicate to People what to do when they experience Sexual Harassment at Work. Whom to approach, When and Where to complain. Get legal advice on this policy to ensure it is in sync with all the legal norms. Once it is complete, ensure that your policy is in the employee handbook and that every employee has a copy and it is also practiced.

2. Awareness Training: Companies can Conduct Sexual harassment awareness training in order to stop it, especially for women employees. Everyone in the Organization should understand what sexual harassment is and what to do if it occurs. In some places this training is mandatory. Ensure managers and supervisors understand their obligation to maintain zero tolerance for sexual harassment in the workplace. They also practice it in real time as example for team members.

3. Check and Watch: Monitor emails and other electronic communications to scan for harassing content from people. Create System to track the People behavior in private and public too. It is important as an employer to be on the lookout for inappropriate behavior and stop it on time.

4. Give Safety: Many times people don’t speak about it because they fear of status, job and many other reasons. Ensure employees know their options if they find themselves in such a situation. Employees should know that they have the right to request the behavior to stop.

5. Clear Policy: Clearly define the process to submit a complaint, including a process for situations where the direct supervisor can be bypassed if necessary. There can be quiet a few Women and Men Complain receiving officers across the unit or office. Those people can be qualified and highly trustable.

6. Signs to Watch: a) Ensure that work-sponsored activities after hours are professional in nature. b) Ensure that supervisors and managers know where to draw the line with employees in terms of tolerating off-color jokes and other offensive material, etc.

Treat every complaint seriously. Respond and complete it on Time. If harassment is discovered, take immediate and appropriate action to ensure it doesn’t happen again. After all, an unfriendly work environment is not a good recipe for High Performance.
